Mel’s art emerges from the complexities of her colourful character, her paintings draw the eye and the imagination into a world of fantasy and intrigue. Each work is bold yet full of subtly and nuance.
Mel revels in the richness and intensity which paint can produce, how it can capture the hues of the landscape as they shift through the changing light and the growth and decay of the cycle of the seasons, and how brush strokes can convey the warmth and texture of cats’ fur and the fluid magic of their shapes.
Yet there is anger too in the work: a deep-seated fury at the vicissitudes and injustices of our modern existence and the pain of living in a world where too many are careless and destroy what is truly precious.
Nevertheless, the driving force behind Mel’s work is fun, laughter and the delight she always feels as she observes her subjects.
“I am forever awestruck by the beauty of nature and I long to convey this enchantment to others.”
